Bolte Taylor, Jill. My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey

My Stroke of Insight

This book differs from many others that we have featured in the library. It does not focus on educational issues. Rather, it is a personal account of the author’s experience of having a stroke when she was 37 years old. As a trained neuroscientist, Bolte Taylor was able to observe the disintegration of her brain’s left hemisphere and to describe her loss of functions as well as her mental and emotional state. The book offers an understandable description of the brain’s functions which may of interest to educators as they read the most recent neuroscientific insights into the nature of learning. Of particular interest to me, was Bolte Taylor’s description of re-learning to read, something I imagine every child experiences but cannot put into words. Ultimately, the book is an inspiring story of one woman’s triumph over what could have been a devastating loss of self.
